Filming a Wedding at Ocean Events

Ocean Events is a private event venue in Costa Mujeres, the northern hotel corridor of Cancún, built around the Capilla María Estrella del Mar, a palm-roofed chapel open on the side facing the sea. Like the other private venues in this guide, there is no in-house wedding department and no vendor fee: the day runs on your own team.

I filmed Fiorela and Steven's wedding here, ceremony inside the chapel with the Caribbean visible the entire time. The complete film is below.

What the day was like

The chapel sits close to the rest of the venue; some guests walked between them. People arrived from lodging scattered across the area, some in their own cars, with a couple of rented vans covering the rest. Everything ran directly through the couple's planner, Ana Contreras, with no venue coordinator involved.

The party had no imposed cutoff. It ran late, and closed with a live mariachi set, which is not something every venue in this corridor can say yes to.

The venue on camera

The chapel is the reason to choose this venue. It has a well-built palm roof, and because the side facing the ocean is open rather than walled, it does not produce the echo you would expect from an enclosed structure. You can see the Caribbean throughout the ceremony, and in the afternoon the light comes in from the side of the chapel and does something genuinely beautiful to the space. Audio ran the way it does at most ceremonies I film: lavaliers on the couple, a recorder on the officiant's microphone, here a priest.

I flew a drone at sunset. Because this is a private venue rather than a resort managing hundreds of guests, I had more room to work: alongside the establishing shots, I filmed the cocktail hour with guests visible and moving through the frame, something I keep to establishing shots only at larger resort properties.

Two honest notes for anyone considering this venue. The chapel and the ocean view are the strength; the rest of the property's interior spaces are more functional than photogenic, and I framed toward the water and the light rather than fighting that. And the location backs up to natural terrain that brings mosquitoes once the sun drops, more than the planning team expected. Someone ended up making a run to a nearby store for repellent mid-event. Plan for it before you need it.

Which venue model is this

Ocean Events is the third model in the three types of wedding venues in Mexico: a private venue. There is no in-house vendor revenue to protect, which is why no outside vendor fee was charged at the wedding I filmed, and no resort wedding desk controlling the timeline or the music curfew. The trade is that everything, from the ceremony logistics to the reception itself, arrives with your team. Here, the planner is not an accessory: the planner is the operating system of the day.

Planning notes for couples considering Ocean Events

  1. Time your ceremony for the afternoon if you want the side light through the chapel; it is one of the best natural setups I've filmed in the corridor.
  2. Bring or arrange bug repellent, especially if your event runs into the evening near natural terrain. It is a small detail that is easy to fix in advance and unpleasant to fix mid-event.
  3. The chapel and the ocean view are the visual centerpiece of this venue; if photos and video matter to you, plan key moments toward that side of the property.
  4. There is no imposed music curfew here, which is part of what makes this venue attractive if you want the party to run long. Confirm current policy with your planner regardless.
  5. No vendor fee was charged when I filmed here, but confirm current terms in writing.
